School Education
The Zambian government no longer charges fees for elementary education; however the cost of school materials and administration are still a huge burden. Secondary level education is more hard to reach for many children who cannot afford the tuition and examination fees. Fewer than 20% of children in Zambia attend secondary school.
Cecily’s Fund is working to overcome this in two key Zambian cities.
How the program works:
• Kitwe- Elementary and Secondary Education
In partnership with a local organization called Hodi, we currently help to support 7,500 children to go to elementary and secondary school in and around the town of Kitwe, in the northern Copperbelt region of Zambia. Cecily's Fund identifies children needing support and provide the school materials, including books, pens and pencils, they need. We also help pay school and examination fees at the high school level (it is free at elementary level) and monitor the progress of each child through his or her school life.
This costs just $40 per child per year at elementary level and $75 at secondary level.
• Lusaka- Elementary Education at Bwafwano Community School
Cecily’s Fund supports a school for Grades 1 through 4 that is part of a community centre called Bwafwano (meaning ‘helping one another’), just outside the capital city Lusaka. We help to finance the salaries of the teaching staff, a midday meal for all 650 pupils, and school materials.
Bwafwano is like a family environment for its pupils, providing a much-needed meal, emotional support and help with moving on to secondary school. Since the program began we have helped to support 1,100 children to progress from Bwafwano to secondary school.
